Florida-strain bass at Bubbling Ponds spawn; fry stocked into Saguaro Lake

The Florida strain-largemouth bass at Bubbling Ponds Fish Hatchery in Cornville have spawned for the first time!

As part of a trial run, we purchased coconut fiber mats used to encourage these bass to spawn in raceways. Some did spawn this spring.

Saguaro Lake stocked with bass fry

This month, 6,300 of the bass fry from Bubbling Ponds were stocked into Saguaro Lake. Florida-strain largemouth bass have been known to reach sizes up to 20 pounds:

“We’re introducing that pure Florida strain into these waters and whatever survives hopefully will go on to mate with other largemouth bass out there,” said Sarah Taylor, AZGFD’s Bubbling Ponds Fish Hatchery Manager. “It will be providing more Florida-strain genetics into those waters and they’re known to be more aggressive fighters.”
